Modification of the Ausf tank. F appeared as a result of studying the combat experience of using Pz. Kpfw. IV in Poland and in France. In these battles, it was convincingly proved that shielding the armored hull with additional armor, which was used on previous modifications of this tank, was irrational and could only be considered as a temporary solution. In this model, instead of using mounted armor, the thickness of the frontal upper plate of the hull, the frontal plate of the turret and the cannon casing was increased to 50 mm, and the thickness of the sides of the hull, as well as the sides and rear of the turret was increased to 30 mm.
