The St. Bernard or Saint Bernard is a very large working dog breed from the Western Alps in Italy and Switzerland. They were originally bred for rescue work at the Great St Bernard Pass Hospital on the Italian-Swiss border. The hospital, built by and named after the Alpine monk Saint Bernard of Menthon, had its first dogs around 1660 and 1670. The breed has become famous for its stories of rescues in the Alps, as well as for its large size and gentle temperament.
