before becoming a pilot, potential candidates must earn their pilot certification while undergoing pilot certification training. candidates cannot become pilots and operate or establish neural links with titans until they earn their pilot certifications in the simulator. the training is split into two parts, pilot and titan training.

the first half of pilot certification training involves a series of simulated exercises involving multiple scenarios. the training is set up to test a candidates speed, endurance and fast reaction timing when faced with dangers or obstacles that the average soldier can't overcome without pilot abilities or a jump kit. it also assesses a candidates combat skills, thoroughly going over and grenade training while taking accuracy and bullet conservation into account. a candidate who manages to quickly complete certain free running courses, flawlessly complete the grenade training and pass the training without reloading their rifle will have it noted in their final assessment. the final part of this training involves the candidate to use all the skills he or she learned to survive against a simulated superior force while being equipped with only a smart pistol, cloak, and frag grenades along with their jumpkits.

those who manage to survive move on to the second portion of the training, operating a titan. candidates learn how to summon and embark titan as well as learning how to use certain titan and abilities. in particular, candidates must learn how to utilize the vortex shield to absorb enemy projectiles and hurl them back at the enemy. they must also learn how to utilize both the chainand salvo missiles, leading up to them learning about core abilities. candidates are ultimately required to face a large number of enemy titans and infantry, being tasked to survive as long as possible. due to the final portion of the training being extremely difficult to complete, a majority of candidates are given their certifications even if they fail the final segment since they managed to meet all the previous requirements. the final portion is set up as more of a lesson than a requirement, since typically one titan faced against many normally ends in the lone titan's destruction as well as the pilot's death. those who manage to complete the final segment without dying are commended for their survival against overwhelming odds, many of whom become some of the deadliest pilots to operate on the frontier.
