A u-ship has huge tanks, called ballast tanks, that allow it to dive and to surface. The tanks fill with water to give it the weight it needs to sink. When the it is ready to surface, the ballast tanks release the water and fill with air. This lightens the vessel enough for it to float.

A vessel with independent underwater operation is a u-ship. It contrasts from a submersible, which has less capabilities for diving underwater.
