turntable or turntable is an electronic device or sound system for playing vinyl records. it consists of a base that accommodates the circular plate, which rotates clockwise, driven by an electric motor, with a central pin where the disc is placed or fitted (a kind of "iron" in the case of an automatic model); on the right there is a pivoting arm containing, at the end, a phonocaptor capsule and a needle to read the vinyl micro grooves. to listen to the record, from the beginning, the needle is placed on the outer edge of the record. cymbal rotation speeds can be 16, 33 and 1/3, 45 or 78 rpm, depending on the model of turntable and the disc to be played.
at the height of the lp, several manufacturers put on the market many models, some very simple, without features and others very sophisticated, with varied features for high fidelity listening, such as fine adjustment of speed through strobe marking, precise, light arms, with multiple adjustments and equipped with excellent quality capsules
a very important item is the phonocaptor capsule and the needle. simpler turntables have low performance capsules, while high fidelity turntables have excellent performance capsules with superior frequency response, making use of elliptical needles that better fit the grooves of the vinyl, allowing for reading more accurate and resulting in superior sound reproduction.
