Another version, which sees the caramel cane as a type of early Christmas tree ornament, explains the hook on the cane as a way to hang it on the tree. There is also a legend linking the appearance of striped caramel canes to the English Revolution, when Puritan authorities banned Christmas festivities. According to the legend, white caramel canes with four red stripes became an identifying mark among the opponents of the regime.
