Berlin was first mentioned in historical records in 1237, when it was a small town in the region of Brandenburg. In the centuries that followed, it grew in importance as a center of trade and commerce.

In 1701, the Elector of Brandenburg, Frederick III, was crowned as the King of Prussia in the city. This marked the beginning of Berlin's association with the Prussian royal family, the Hohenzollerns, who would go on to rule the city for centuries.

During the 19th century, Berlin underwent rapid industrialization and became the center of Germany's growing economy. It also became a hub of culture and the arts, with many famous writers, artists, and musicians making their home in the city.
