conan the barbarian is a 1982 american fantasy film. the plot tells about the cimmerian conan, a character in the novels of robert e. howard, which were published in the 1930s in pulp magazines. the film is set in hyboria, a fictional prehistoric era. the adapted story was written by director john milius; the film is produced by dino de laurentiis, and his daughter raffaella de laurentiis and buzz feitshans were also involved in this work. the composer was basil poledouris. the main roles were played by arnold schwarzenegger and james earl jones. the plot centers on the story of a young barbarian conan, who tries to take revenge on the high priest of the serpent cult tulsa doom for the death of his parents.

the idea to make a film about conan appeared in the 1970s; in 1975, edward r. pressman and edward summer began preparing for filming. it took them two years to get the rights to shoot, after which they chose arnold schwarzenegger for the lead role and oliver stone to write the script. however, pressman did not have the money to work on the project, and in 1979, when most film studios refused to invest in the film, he sold the project to dino de laurentiis. john milius was brought in to direct, and he rewrote stone's script.

filming took place over five months in spain near madrid and in the province of almeria. the sets, created by ron cobb, were based on the culture of the dark ages and on drawings by frank frazetta. milius decided to refrain from using optical special effects, preferring to implement his ideas with the help of mechanical structures and optical illusions. schwarzenegger performed most of the stunts on his own, and the two swords he fought with were made specifically for the film and cost $ 10,000 each. the editorial work took more than a year; some scenes of violence were cut out.

the film was a commercial success — the box office worldwide amounted to more than $ 68 million, but the level of revenue did not allow the film to be classified as a blockbuster. scholars and critics have interpreted the film's plot as a development of the themes of fascism and individualism, with the former being mostly negative. at the same time, critics negatively responded to the game of schwarzenegger and the scenes of violence present in the film. however, despite this, conan the barbarian became very popular among male teenagers, and schwarzenegger brought world fame. the film received the saturn award and 8 nominations. in 1984, a sequel was made — the film conan the destroyer directed by richard fleischer. an attempt to make the third and final film conan the conqueror failed, the prepared script was reworked with the replacement of conan with kull-atlanta, after which the film was released under the title kull the conqueror (1997). in 2011, there was a remake of conan the barbarian with jason momoa in the title role.
