In 1963, a devastating earthquake struck Skopje, killing over 1,000 people and destroying much of the city. The rebuilding effort that followed was led by the architect Kenzo Tange, who designed a new modernist city center that is still visible today.

In 1991, Macedonia declared independence from Yugoslavia, and Skopje became the capital of the new country. Since then, the city has undergone significant development and modernization, including the construction of new buildings, parks, and public spaces.
