Skopje is the capital and largest city of North Macedonia. The city has a long and complex history, with evidence of human settlements in the area dating back to at least 4000 BCE.

In ancient times, Skopje was known as Scupi and was an important city in the Roman Empire. It was later conquered by various groups, including the Byzantines, Bulgarians, and Ottomans.

In the 20th century, Skopje was part of Yugoslavia and played a significant role in the country's history. During World War II, the city was occupied by Nazi Germany and suffered extensive damage. After the war, Skopje was rebuilt and became a center of industry and culture in Yugoslavia.

In 1963, a devastating earthquake struck Skopje, killing over 1,000 people and destroying much of the city. The rebuilding effort that followed was led by the architect Kenzo Tange, who designed a new modernist city center that is still visible today.

In 1991, Macedonia declared independence from Yugoslavia, and Skopje became the capital of the new country. Since then, the city has undergone significant development and modernization, including the construction of new buildings, parks, and public spaces.
