The M240, officially designated as the Machine, 7.62 mm, M240, is the U.S. military’s version of the FN MAG—a family of belt-fed, gas-operated medium weapons chambered for the 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge. Introduced in the late 1970s, the M240 has become a cornerstone of U.S. Armed Forces weaponry, widely used by infantry units, mounted on ground vehicles, watercraft, and aircraft alike.

Renowned for its reliability, the M240's slightly heavier weight is often outweighed by its consistent performance and the advantage of NATO standardization. All variants of the M240 are fed by disintegrating belts and can accommodate most types of 7.62 NATO ammunition.
