Beschrijving

Melbourne is the capital city of the state of Victoria in Australia. It was founded in 1835 by settlers led by John Batman, who claimed to have purchased land from the local Wurundjeri people. The settlement was named "Melbourne" after the British Prime Minister, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne.

Melbourne grew rapidly in the 1850s and 1860s as a result of the gold rush in Victoria. Thousands of people flocked to the city in search of wealth, and Melbourne quickly became one of the wealthiest and most cosmopolitan cities in the world.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Melbourne continued to grow and develop, with the construction of grand public buildings, parks, and boulevards. The city also became a major center for manufacturing, commerce, and culture.

In the mid-20th century, Melbourne underwent significant urban renewal and modernization, including the construction of new highways and high-rise buildings. The city also hosted the Olympic Games in 1956.
