Melbourne is the capital city of the state of Victoria in Australia. It was founded in 1835 by settlers led by John Batman, who claimed to have purchased land from the local Wurundjeri people. The settlement was named "Melbourne" after the British Prime Minister, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne.
