Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. The strategic location of Gibraltar has made it a coveted possession throughout history, and it has been the subject of numerous conflicts over the centuries.

The earliest known inhabitants of Gibraltar were the Neanderthals, who lived there between 50,000 and 30,000 years ago. Since then, Gibraltar has been a British Overseas Territory, with the exception of a brief period during the Spanish Civil War when it was controlled by Spain. The territory has been of strategic importance throughout its history, serving as a naval base and a key point of control for shipping entering and leaving the Mediterranean.
