in the brazilian dictionary of the portuguese language, by antônio joaquim de macedo soares, published in 1889, the term appears as a synonym for bidet and "velador", described as "bedroom furniture, placed at the foot of the bed, and on which put the candlestick with the candle, the box of matches, the glass of water, etc.; it has a marble top, a little drawer, and two shelves with a door where you keep urinals".
