The Typhoon-class submarines, known in Russia as Project 941 Akula (Russian: Акула, meaning "Shark"), are the largest nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) ever built. Designed by the Soviet Union during the Cold War, these submarines were a key component of the Soviet nuclear triad. Only six Typhoon-class submarines were constructed, with the first, Dmitriy Donskoy (TK-208), serving as a test platform for the Bulava missile system until its decommissioning in 2023
