The Dalmatian is a white dog with black spots. Originally bred as a hunting dog, they were also used as sled dogs and were also known as fire dogs in the early days when firefighters still used horse-drawn sleds. This gave them the name fire dogs. The origins of the breed can be traced back to Croatia and its historic Dalmatian region. It is believed that the original ancestors of the breed were several hunting dogs and a spotted Great Dane.
