every year, during the night of november 1st, the souls of those who are gone return to their homes to visit their loved ones, these altars serve as beacons to guide them. they consist of food and drinks the deceased liked, chocolate and sugar skulls, salt to cleanse the soul, white cloth that symbolizes purity, candles to guide the spirits along with a trail of cempasuchil flowers, which are believed to store the sun light to illuminate the path during the night. and most important of all, a picture or portrait of the deceased.
