Description
The Grumman TBF Avenger was a single-engine torpedo bomber that served in all theaters of World War II with the U.S. Navy and other Allied forces. It was a large, rugged aircraft, powered by a Wright R-2600 radial engine, and crewed by a pilot, gunner, and radio operator/bombardier. While designed for torpedoes, its large internal bomb bay and versatility allowed it to be used for bombing, anti-submarine warfare, and other duties, and it was built in large numbers by both Grumman (TBF) and General Motors (TBM)
