Homer Jay Simpson is one of the main characters of the animated series The Simpsons and the father of the eponymous family. Voiced by Dan Castellaneta, he first appeared on television along with the rest of his family in the animated short Goodnight, shown on The Tracey Ullman Show on April 19, 1987. Homer was created and designed by animator Matt Groening while he waited in the lobby of James Brooks' office.
