Jack was barred from entering heaven by god and hell by the Devil was on his passing stuck in a earthly purgatory for eternity alone. The devil tossed a coal up from hell to jack who carved out a pumpkin to carry the coal with him and light his way as he wonders the earth and this is why the carved pumpkin is called a Jack-o-Lantern.
