Description

The Norwegian Lundehund (Norwegian: Norsk lundehund) is a small breed of Spitz-type dog originating in Norway. Its name is a compound noun composed of the elements lunde, meaning seagull (Norwegian lunde, "seagull", or lundefugl, "seagull"), and hund, meaning dog. The breed was originally developed to hunt seagulls and their eggs in inaccessible nesting sites in caves and on cliffs. The breed was on the brink of extinction in the 1960s and conservation efforts have been underway since then.
