serial production of panzerkampfwagen iv ausf tanks. e began in december 1939 and ended in april 1941. a total of 224 vehicles were manufactured. the appearance of this modification was caused primarily by the insufficient armor protection of vehicles. early series. the german engineers were faced with the task of strengthening the protection of the t-iv. the frontal and side armor was reinforced with additional armor plates, and the commander's cupola was reinforced. the increased mass was compensated by wider caterpillars. tanks pz-iv ausf. e fought in the balkans, north africa and on the eastern front in russia.
