Description

A battle axe is a medieval specialized hand-held striking weapon, or an axe intended for use as a weapon.

A battle axe could be made of stone, metal (copper, iron), or, less commonly, other materials. It was used primarily for close combat. Some types of axes, such as the German francisca, could also be thrown. Light, short-shafted battle axes are single-handed. Heavy and long-shafted axes are two-handed. Single-sided axes have one blade (blade), while double-sided axes have two (labrys, sagaris), or are combination weapons, meaning they are equipped with a pick, hammer, hook, mace, or combined with a firearm. An additional point may also be located on the top. Sometimes, a notch at the lower end of the handle is also designed for use in combat. Battle axe handles could be simply wooden, equipped with additional protection in the form of iron strips (slings), or entirely iron. The fighter's hand could also be protected by a disc-shaped or arched guard, like that found on bladed weapons.
